THE SHORT INDEX of TOPICS

 

Now it seems that the time has come to simplify indexes. This is not to remove or abolish, not to temper or tamper with the main indexes, found in Search; but it is to provide an additional facility: the SHORT INDEX.

This is not intended to present the 'main' or 'most important' or most apt works for any given topic, but has been found simply to be useful in seeking to garner and gather matters from time to time, and hence has become available, after much labour, to others who may wish to have a shorter way to find some parts of some topics.

Naturally, there will normally be much more in the larger index; but much time may be needed, and this for the one who would run as he reads, as a preliminary perhaps to reading as he runs to disperse the peace of God by His Gospel, may prove useful. One hopes so.

Some may feel that there is overwhelming testimony here: it is however only God who is overwhelming, and that is delicious. If we could not be overwhelmed, how mini- our spirits, how miniscule our paths and how downgraded our proddings! What is before us all in this contemporary world is a vast mass of information, data, dated data, timeless data, trivial data; but the word of God is never outdated; and for those who seek it as treasure, it grants surveys with that height of wonder,  with that mystery of brilliance and depth, that seemingly effortless breadth,  which soothes and stimulates simultaneously. Indeed,  if I were a computer and my boss did not understand me, it would seem imperative to find one who did!

That, it would not be mere selfishness, for without knowledge, yes rather without wisdom, where is man ? Here, your 'boss' may be the self-chosen folly of culture, past, present or presumptively future; or some part thereof. Yet it is all trivial, passing, subversive and subverted in advance, knowing nothing but its unbased knowledge, and not seeing its basis or its meaning. He is worse than when he first began, and when he adds insolence and spiritual insolvency to his misdeeds towards his Maker, then at last it may be for him, for her, as for Judas Iscariot, better for that one never to have been born! It is useless to pretend that reality is soft. It is hard when you ignore it (cf. The Just One). 

Even a jewel case could bring blood if you fell on it.  Yet what it contains, when opened carefully, may be all but priceless.

There is nothing fearful about life but the folly of losing it unworthily; and there is in the fear of the Lord, a cleanness which banishes carnal fear (cf. I John 4:17-18, Psalm 19), and has the relish one may experience in Winter, before a raging but perfectly contained fire. God is never out of control; it is merely the free-wheeling world which is.

Study therefore the word of God, the ways of God, the work of God, the Gospel of His solution to man's wilfulness and the guide to life from His hands, confirmed in Jesus Christ and in His word, which runs the world to its conclusion, as if it were on a railway line, so precise is all the prophecy and so ample all the indications.

It is possible to index freely, as in the larger index, because everything fits together, the world He designed, our minds which He designed, our spirits which He created; and when we are peace with Him, our spirits nestle in His, and are in that state of contentment and strength which is better than life (Psalm 97, 63:3, Isaiah 33:6, 26:1ff.): for indeed, His lovingkindness is better than life.

Life without it, is mess, however indulged for a time; with it, is mastery of the Maker and wonder in His will. This is found not only in the harmonies of all scriptures, the Bible, but of one's heart, mind and spirit when at rest in Him. It is only then that work becomes, if intensely laborious at times, a thing of intrinsic beauty.
