                                            PREFACE

The trilogy has now become a quaternion of volumes, a new quota on predestination, foreknowledge, on liberty and necessity, and in these environs, on responsibility, duty and creativity. How do you they all cohere ? Most readily, if and only if (IFF) you follow the biblical premises.

This is because you need a truth which is there, and able to be conceived within the model you use for understanding life, the universe, time and eternity, man and his place. Mercifully, this model is provided in the Bible. It is – as just one of the innumerable verifications of its truth and source in that Truth who makes truth for man about man possible – also the desideratum which mind must seek, and the solution at which it respires with delight, when it is found. It is like water, long envisaged, often conceived, but never either found or seen as to its composition. The need however is apparent. Thirst is not without harm, too long deferred in its quest. It can even lead to poisons, damaging to the system, and destructive of life.

When you find the truth, you can at last receive the payload of which it is the Father: from a world view which is coherent, rational, harmonious in its elements, uniquely valid, workable and self-verificatory. Since without truth, it is useless to talk of exhibitions of it in overview, we need what is from God without delay. It is not surprising that He has differentiated Himself from philosophic putations by His word, and that by its power, validity and regality. There is but one attestation of this. It needs not to change, since the Creator of time is not subordinate to it, and surrogates are worthless. It is needed from the first, and to the last. There is but one attestation of that also. The Bible as proposition, the Christ as Performer, these in holy alliance are astride history as a colossus over a harbour.

Yet this is no dead colossus, like that fabulous construction for Rhodes, nor does it slip into the sea, break or degrade. Quite to the contrary, its life is continually attested in three clear ways. Firstly, history is in conformity to it, as it is woven, and its pattern is precisely as predicted in the Book, the Bible. Secondly, life in Christ is dynamic with His action and comradeship. Thirdly,  that life is according to sublime promises, which have the necessary quality of working, whether for discipline or for deliverance.

It is merely an application of this fact that allows one to find in the area of the present volume, as in any other, that it works as nothing else does.

It is only then as one of many verifications, that these special ingredients in our title not merely make sense in the conspectus of the Biblical faith and propositions, but they provide more. In their total biblical context, they allow one to make hay while the sun shines, as it continually does in this environment of terms. ALL is explained, and there is not even any difficulty. It is just like finding the solution to a mathematical problem: when you do, there is an amazing facility and one wonders how it could ever have been missed.

In this fourth of the quaternion of volumes, further aspects are taken or aspects taken further, for it is like perfume, the more you receive, the more you are ready to discriminate within it.

Chs. 7, 8, 9 and 10 are entirely new, Ch. 4 is expanded and Ch. 6 has substantial addition. Touches may also be made here and there in the earlier work, as here presented.

While, therefore, it is partly for convenience of reference that this new volume is presented, so that together with the other three, it might bring a ready overview of the topics involved, in the splendour of the setting God has provided, this work also presents some developments of its own.
