PREFACE
Victory is loved, sulked over, sought, brandished, bellowed, heralded, verbally affirmed, shouted, seductively offered, by this world, by the Satan who invested in it his all, by sin, by captives proclaiming liberty to the lost, that their plight might be complicated by verbal schisms from reality, defilement of truth and prostitution of personality.
This world loves a fight, and it loves to win. It loses, so the whole world of philosophical, military, governmental, psychological, biological, physiological, sociological propaganda merges its wares with spiritual pollutions for which our Age is indeed famous, and justly infamous: all of this deceives. It offers palm branches in profusion, pretensions in confusion, aspirations in delusion, and hates God.
'Hating God' is not a declaration you have to MAKE, like the American Declaration of Independence. It is not an emotion you actually have to have nestling like Cleopatra's asp, in your unprotected bosom. It amounts to this: that what HE wants, you do not like; that what HE is, you do not submit to, what is the TRUTH which ONLY HE has or can have, except by donation from His word, attested by His works, you do not adopt. You adapt to what is not God IN PRACTICE, whatever verbiage you use, and you console yourself in what is not truth, or become desolate as the case and the stage of the spiritual disease may be.
'You' ? One speaks of those who do not know God, as do the sons of Korah in Psalm 49, where it ends like this:
"Though while he lives, he blesses himself
(For men will praise you when you do well for yourself),
He shall go to the generation of his fathers.
These shall never see light.
A man who is in honour yet does not understand,
Is like the beast that perish."
That is, one speaks here of those who lacking light, the light of God, use psychological mythological, biological, philosophical torches of incredible lack-lustre, praising each diminutive pixel which peers into the darkness beyond.
Victory is not found in the palms this world has to offer, nor its palmistries of psychology, its warfares in commerce or politics, in war or in 'peace' awaiting the next due provocation to disturb or disrupt it. It is found in knowing, loving, believing in, trusting, following, being faithful to and finding the faithfulness of God who made you. It is as simple as that. It is an adventure, a delight, a challenge, a choice for the Christian who must persevere in prayer, and it is a necessity for his heart. THIS, says I John 5:4 in that ever blessed verse, "is the victory that has overcome the world, even your faith." What more does he next say ? This: " Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God."
The Son of God is as defined to be in I John 1, where it is that eternal life which was with God, who became flesh.
THIS victory is not only OVER the sharp and incestuous appeals of this world, which wants what GOD begets for its own group and troupe, but it is also over the appeal and appeals of the flesh: that crucial cry for independence EVEN from the true and living God, and therefore from the mandate of His word to man, the Bible, and HIS saviour for man, the Lord Jesus Christ.
It is a victory FOR the Lord in having His way with His children. It is a victory for His children in NOT having themselves suborned, seduced or used as speculative materials for the experimenters of this world, never satisfied with the truth, always seeking some new thing, always old in sin, aged in Satan, aggressive in protestation, abundant in information, complete in devastation.
The world is going: it has been noted in Isaiah 24, 51:6, in Christ's words to be seen in Matthew 24:35, and the stratosphere, the ionosphere, the realm of space with it. That news has been out for millenia, and the world will go out like a light, except that in the process it will make abundant heat and will writhe in its clashing fall into obliteration
II Peter 3 speaks in some detail on this event to be. Its works, he declares, will be burnt up. Of course, such works as disadorn the earth, whether in Hitleresque Nazism, delusive communism, magical evolutionism, bloodythirsty derivatives of Islam, world peacenik efforts to subdue all the earth to the post-British Empire, the New Empire of Flesh, biblically to come (cf. Revelation 13, II Thessalonians 2): what else could become of them. They go, and they will go not being desired; for they have deluded many, not least their practitioners (More Marvels ... Ch. 4, SMR pp. 125ff., 925ff., Aviary of Idolatry, Wake Up World! ... Chs. 4, 5).
Christ is coming. This too has been proclaimed for millenia, clearly in Psalm 2, 110, 73, in Isaiah 50-55, 63, 66, in Jeremiah 23, in Haggai, as in Zechariah: His coming not only to suffer (now past, as He explained when on that mission – Luke 24, carefully differentiating the work of the atonement from that of His coming rule), but to govern. Just look at Isaiah 9, and close the mouth to the deceits of this world, and open the heart to the peace of Christ. It is not hard to find, if you are willing (Matthew 23:37, I Timothy 2); and if you are not willing, why, hell is for sale for a soul!
Victory is not the offal of offering ever new qualifications to the service and love of God; it is loving God according to His word by the power of His Spirit in the terms of His covenant of inimitable, illimitable grace as in Ephesians 2, 4, John 3.
It is more precious than rubies; the path of wisdom; the place of prayer; the provision of God.
