PREFACE
The puny, pusillanimous, defective, de facto and not de jure, the premature, the immature, the merely quaint, the tittivating, the merely titled, these things may be; but they are not for adoration.
The novelties of imagination have their place, and great is the joy of creation; but when the innovative is the execrable, and when the focus is the foolish, then what does man become if not a gash in the cliff face, a vacuity instead of solidity, a ruin in the making to become a relic without joy.
Greatness is in the eye and heart of man, and it is often perverted to his own contemplation, or that of his family, society or mere ideology. People die for such things, vanity, association, respect. It may be of those who are thesmselves unrespectable, but their respect still enthralls.
Are you a GENUINE child-killing terrorist, who cares nothing for flesh ? Do you QUALIFY, do you have the QUALITY! Can you take the things needed to reach this social level of acceptance!
Such becomes a type of such human offerings to folly, misplaced adoration for what is contemptible, mesmeric motivations that gash into the heart of humanity, and collide with that of the Lord.
Saddam Hussein, we read, used to have close associates, or those intended for such honour, witness tortures unspeakable and death, in order to harden them and make them ready. But for what!
So does power and glory tempt man to become a horror, haunted by folly, of which Hussein was a symbol, for the sake of what ? Acceptance, with funds, paid perhaps as in one parallel case, for killing Jews, so much each, like buying deaths at a supermarket. How perverse are the adoration, the accolades and the abasement before what is base!
It is to God alone that such adoration is due, and since God has shown in only one verified way, where He is, it is to that way alone, that God-given wisdom turns. Who as Christ has been foretold, who as He has given all and had all to give, who but He and the prophets who foretold Him and the apostles who were His, has commanded history, and it turns at His word: His predictions in perfection, as was His life!
This we have often seen, but in this volume it is the fact and reality of the adoration which is in view, and its fitting relationship to the One adored in a way NOT FITTING FOR ANY OTHER. With this proceeds action that matches, as the beauties of Harris tweed can so well match the fields near the site of their manufacture! and attitudes, and spirit, all governed by God. With the adoration come as inseparable correlative, the glory which is His who is worshipped, incomparable to all creation, uplifting in contemplation, a wonder in experience, natural as the seas, beyond nature as its Creator.
Clearing the windscreen of dust and sticky insect bodies is useful; it enables better vision. Avoiding adoration of what is not God, and seeing in that sublimity which is His, the incomparable basis and authentic call of life, is what makes for stability of intellect, of life, of emotions, of kindness and of contrition. Without it, how soon comes pride in one's humility, or one's knowledgeability, sheer niceness, or macro-might as the case may be! Without such love for the Lord who is worthy of it, there is compromise with truth, some even failing knowingly to teach it, in order to keep a job, or avoiding the searching and penetrating analysis of the Bible in order to keep aloof from what is unsettling. So readily, their ideology becomes one of self-trust, self-esteem, self-righteousness. Romans 10 gives an example.
The sheer sublimity of God has as fitting correlative the absolute adoration; and this misplaced in life, consciously or unconsciously, what can it become but an introduction to slavery, to oneself, one's God-forsaken ideology, built on desire, the farewell to reality and the dawn of servitude.
