GLOSSARY

Its Contents and Purpose

There are included words and phrases with some extensions on aspects of interest, so that where readers

a) find difficulties with any individual words

b) need help with phrases

c) want elucidation on some issues

d) might like a short summation on some point to enable comparison and a closer capture of the force of a point or nature of an area their needs will be met. Sometimes in chemistry it is useful to have a short statement with limited discussion, on certain basic terms or issues, for a more assured study; and this may apply here.

It is hoped that this may not only shorten time for grasping some points and sharpen recall on some words for some readers, but positively allow some younger readers or those less verbally oriented to gain access to areas of the book. Since this work is written to give help, this provision for broadening of the reader base and ease of progress has seemed worthwhile.

TWO SECTIONS

First, there appears the glossary proper. This given in the order of reading thebook, by page number of the actual text of this work. It allows the reader to flick to the glossary, turning its pages from time to time, to keep pace with the book: if this is desired.

However some readers may wish at any time or for some other reason to check various terms, for meaning or comment, and therefore there follows a glossary in alphabetical order . Next to each word - following it in brackets, there is set the page of the glossary, already given, on which that term appears. This alphabetical access to the glossary is found below on pages 1209-1216.

787: ATONEMENT - an at-one-ment (constructed term) or reconciliation; a bringing to a one-ness or peace; a removal in peace... of war, of opposition or estrangement between persons.

The Hebrew underlying this term speaks of expiation, purging, making a settlement by means of an offering of what is due; and in this case, as Leviticus 16 illustrates and many references confirm, it is a question of life for life transactions, so that a substitute life covers the sin of the justly condemned one, a basis for mercy duly provided. The concept of ransom is related verbally, and the usage extends as in  Exodus 31:10-15, to the offer of a money payment "that there may be no plague" (Exodus 30:11), aiding the sanctuary work, occasioned by sin, in the service of the Lord. Similarly it is used in Leviticus 3:45ff., to cover the case of those who are not taken into service, in lieu of personal presence.

Those not used in the ritual service of the Lord, are said to be "redeemed" in this way; and it was in fact the "firstborn" who, instead of being so offered to the Lord, were excused, the Levites doing it instead. Thus for the firstborn, this payment attested their obligations from which this redemption delivered them. One does the necessary service for the other, and the short-fall on the part of the other is expressed in specific payment.

In parallel, on the day of ATONEMENT, there is a deeper payment, yet one still addressing the ransom, substitutionary provision, so that on that day there is a confession over the head of the life goat, all the sins of the people, while the priest puts his hands on the head of this goat, which is then sent into the wilderness, carrying away, in symbolic running, the sin of the people. This dismissed goat, excluded from the people like a rejected alien,  thus is to "bear on itself" the iniquities, just as before the sacrificed goat had borne them, before its death: again in symbolic form (16:15). The sacrificed goat is deemed a sin offering, and as with sin offerings (Leviticus 4: 4), the hand is laid in this way on its head, and the sin is "borne".

As Leviticus 17:11 puts it, the blood then "makes atonement for the life". The sprinkling of the blood on the mercy-seat, or area above the thunderous condemnations of the law in the ark beneath, in the Holy of Holies int the Temple, was to make atonement. Thus this hierarchy of life, and blood, and ransom, and expiation and atonement, this redeeming and payment and covering of the case with the use of another life, said to bear the sin, is the fearful force required for the expiation of sin; and its terminus in Jesus Christ is the exposure to perfection, in His perfection, of its gruesome and fatal carnage, wrought in the life which sins. It is a costly business, takes and wreaks its vengeance on the life, and the life of Christ alone is able to redeem with payment sufficient in quality to meet spiritual standards, in scope to cover many and in eternity, to confer it.

795: NUCLEAR FUSION - a change of the components of nuclei through association, linked with enormous release of power, as occurs in a hydrogen bomb. (Distinguished from nuclear fission, in which there is a division, a break-down of a nucleus of relatively high atomic number into simple substances, also relating to huge apparent transformation of some matter into energy).

CONSUMMATORY - occurring at the level of utter development, producing the highest and final results. Often 'consummative' may be used instead.

842: IDOLATRY - the practice of worshipping, consciously or perhaps even unconsciously what is 'not God; attitude to things or a thing created which transcends its worth, goes beyond what is correct for it, but is fitting for God only.

843: BONDAGE - slavery, a condition of restraint in bonds, of being a prisoner, one held.

844: IDENTIKIT: a kit or assemblage of things to help or enable one to identify something, to show what it is.

STATISM - a placing of a political State into a position of power, prominence or authority, so that instead of being treated as under God, it is regarded as if it were under nothing. Oddly enough, relativistic, humanistic States (as to their philosophy) can in practice become wholly absolutist, since they reject any other power. Such States (ancient Rome... increasingly some modern 'democracies', as well as the Communistic or Fascist cases) become potential idols, are entitled 'beasts' in Revelation, harbour the spirit of antichrist, and fight God in spirit, even if too blind in spirit to know it in fact. They ask for divine judgment.

Democracy is superior to totalitarian States because in principle, it interferes less with a man's relation to God, arrogates or proudly takes less.

As to nations caught in statism: They may not merely limit such things in freedom of action or expression, but assault them with State power, either by misrepresentation, inveiglement, or by exclusion. (Cf. p. 446 supra.)

While this is against the freedom democracy is supposed to give, and does at times tend to give, it is not prevented by the case, as in Australia, where the illusory notion of 'Community' is used in practice to usurp the command of Christ. It is utilised to suppress, to supplant, to secure other ways, subtly, strenuously and constantly... Insidiously and often clandestinely, the people may then both be led where they are to go, and be made the apparent ground of the autocratic dictates of government, of the people, by the people, for some of the people and against God. (Cf. *23, p. 973A supra.)

As democratic peoples lose their morals, desire material things first, follow their own culture, become uncritical of ideas, and simply proceed on commonly accepted norms, they begin to tyrannise, as South Australia has done in education in its government schools, even pretending evolution is science, excluding free debate, virtually excising the topic of creation in science and so on. The irony is that this resembles the walk or manner of a totalitarian State in this regard. Exclusion of open debate, not harassed by gratuitous pre-suppositions, but aptly subject to logical validity, is itself a deadly peril to democracy: foundering without knowledge, not sufficiently critical to realise that a salient aspect of totalitarianism has arrived without authority, without ground; and for many perhaps even... without recognition!

845: DEROGATE - to reduce the reputation or image of, humble, speak against.

ORTHODOX - following the accepted rule, or line, or thought, or ideas, correct.

850: PSEUDO-EUPHORIC - resembling euphoria: the state of contented delight; appearing to have, or having some similarities with euphoria.

EUPHORIC - concerned with euphoria.

COLLECTIVISM - the philosophy or idea or rule such that people are seen like bees in colonies, companies, without integrity and basic reality accorded to the individual. The irony of such views is this: the view comes from someone who thinks it - an individual. Counsel can be shared, but each single mind thinks (well or poorly ) its ideology, criticising, pretending, following, thinking it follows, working it out for itself, deceiving others, deceiving itself, working sloppily or whatever may be the individual case.

IBID - same place; just where the last reference was made.

851: CONGENIAL - pleasant, of a like or kindred spirit, suitable, comfortable.

CULTURAL CONDITIONING - a process which tends to make some minds follow the pressures and preferences, often morally or logically wrong, of a given culture. To what extent this actually occurs depends on vanity, folly, carelessness, self-satisfaction, spiritual deadness (for an alienated society), laziness, greed, lust, and to some aspects and on some occasions, the extent to which a society follows the truth. This is rarely substantial, according to scripture, though in some periods of revival and reformatory zeal, it may increase noticeably, Christians acting as a leaven.

Cultural conditioning is not a necessity but a possibility to be guarded against; clearly many have other, better or worse vision, and project this against the social stream. Conditioning is no excuse for error, but a manner of it. An analogy would be a camp in which the people are physically slack, and many 'condition' themselves into poor physical condition. They need not have done so, and many would not. Health stands... and so does truth, fearing nothing.

852: DURESS - hardship, severity, rigour.

857: KERYGMA - that which is proclaimed; the gospel (noun form, related to Greek verb, to proclaim).

SELF-INTERPRETING BOOK: one which is able to clarify in one place what is difficult in another, and/or gives directions as to how it is to be interpreted, and/or not interpreted. With the Bible, dependence in spirit on others is declared quite unnecessary (1 John 2:27), indeed forbidden (Matthew 23:8-10); yet team members may indeed prove most helpful (1 Corinthians 14 lists gifts); and what is written must be heeded without limit by pastor, theologian or others. This is because the origin of this book is none of these, but God - who expects obedience: not obfuscation, deviousness or 'community' consciousness as an excuse for avoiding the obvious, clearly written.

859: IDIOSYNCRATIC - concerned with idiosyncrasy: a special feature of character or physical kind, which occurs in, or is developed by some individual. For 'solipsism' see supra p. 332A re p. 264.

CONTRA MUNDUM - Latin: 'against the world'. It connotes a situation where someone appears to ignore, to be indifferent to or simply to go without all others.

LITERARY LICENCE - a freedom peculiar to or appropriate for literature, or the apt and language-conscious productions of writers; but ironically, the phrase may refer to the use of freedom such that pure rubbish is produced, an undisciplined or arrogant use of imagination where matters of fact require careful attention.

861: ARCHEOLOGICAL VERIFICATION - a showing to be correct to the extent that what is assumed or stated in ancient writings, as to matters of concrete and checkable fact, is found to be exactly right, when ancient exhibits are dug up or found. This may be writings, coins, pottery, buildings, each with a tale to tell. If the tale tallies with what the ancient writing stated, this is archeological verification.

This in itself is one of the master fields of Biblical verification in the twentieth century, with archeologists like the eminent Fullbright indicating over and over again, ancient findings which exactly verify scriptural statements. The century of scientific discovery thus becomes that of archeological verification.

862: PROLETARIAT - the simplistic Marxist term for the 'common people'. But who is common ? See notes on 'middle class'- Chapter 9, Section 5, *12 infra. The relatively poor (or moderate in means), for example, may be anything from unutterably dull of mind, to incandescently brilliant; anything from debauched, degraded and dissolute to saintly, moderate and disciplined; from easily led to flamboyantly active in leadership; lovers of the status quo to radicals wanting it to change, blow up or be cast aside; devious and deceitful schemers to distasteful sneerers, supinely ensconced in self-satisfaction; from glorious givers to mean takers, disturbers of the nation, to those who do not wish to be disturbed; dreamers of idealistic if wanton idylls, to crass indifferentists; from morally eccentric to moral pillars. Economic bags for the human spirit are about as wise as would be the appointment of frogs as friends for biologists; as logical as making social poise an index of affluence, affluence of intelligence, intelligence of morals, ideology of ability. It is fascinating how anaesthetised so many can become when hate is the tutor and desire the director of the human mind, abusing the inter-relation of categories with all the verve and fervour of an ice-skater at the Olympics, only to fall at the first step on the surface of reality.

Income does not divide humanity in any way except that stated: it does not even divide them as to wealth, for many rich may have little income from investments in land and so on; or earn little personally.

Marx was a strange combination: a strained romanticist who talked about things intended to be 'hard reality' with a looseness which reduced it to mere propaganda. Even 'non-managerial workers' may work in factories and write plays; while the social outcast, languishing in his garret may be a creative genius who laughs at the poor, the rich or anyone or anything, or even himself: something at which Marx appeared to have small skill. They are not a class, though someone may try to make them to share engulfing or intoxicating passions as if they were - and that of course is the role of the propagandist, the surrealist, the one who is to make things seem other than they are: the illusionist.

This is in contrast to the One who can make things become other than they are: the truth that can transform. This is not a new departure but an old return. Old as is the first-formed image from Him by whom man was made, it is startlingly new to the transformee! Here the internal spirit of man is moved to a new relationship and awareness, in which the power of God, the person of the Holy Spirit and the creativity of the Creator give genuine homology (not identity) to those so 'regenerated' by God. This is systematic, and creates a family with all its variety, which nevertheless has certain constraining criteria at the spiritual level, both imparted, declared and required.

Not a novelty, it is yet a reality with this difference, that it is now eternal (1 John 3:9,. John 10:9, 27-28, John 5:24), a conferment through redemption (Romans 5:1-11), nullifying alienation and ensuring the removal of that wrath that condemns: "we shall be saved by His life". It starts within (John 3:3-6, Colossians 3:10, II Corinthians 5:19-21), and is constrained by the work of the spirit of God (II Corinthians 3:18), who proceeds with the 'painting' of what has been produced.

862: MATERIALISTIC CARICATURE OF CHRISTIANITY - Using spiritual things in ways that ignore their connotation, and making material things have a personality and power they lack, Marx managed to make a system in which the proletariat in effect redeem their nation, through exercising a lordship called a 'dictatorship'. The powers of evil appear under the guise of what gets in their way, and so on. De Koster develops the point in detail in a book of great worth (see Bibliography).

SURREALIST - a term from art, where it indicates something not quite like the real: a combination with the stuff of dreams, a wandering, divergent and less organised matrix.

VERBAL RECONSTRUCTIONISM - a misuse of words in such a way that they come in new unannounced meanings; perhaps with all the fervour of the propagandist to re-create the religion from a Kantian dungeon.( See Kant, Index.)

865: PAROUSIA - appearing, the visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ, as prophesied and to occur. It is not invisible but scripturally like lightning, though many will be unprepared.

LOC.CIT. - in the place mentioned; just where we looked last time.

867: MALEFICENT - doing evil, working wrong.

DEFALCATION - taking as one's own, another's funds or financial instruments (as in law); and in this, misuse or abuse of trust.

TELEMETRY - measurement at a distance (tele - far; meter - measure).

869: OP.CIT. - in the work cited; in the book etc. already mentioned, and to which reference has been made.

ERSATZ - not genuine, artificial, used as a replacement of what is authentic. The term was much used in World War II for substitute foods, required by war-time stringencies.

GURU - an Oriental mystic, especially Hindu, supposedly holy, of notable powers; someone to follow.

870: PSEUDO-DIVINE - having merely an impudent attempt or guise of being divine.

871: PROFUNDITY - depth, the quality of being very large and comprehending in approach: one not superficial or short-sighted, but looking far, seeing well and covering much.

872: SINNER - SELF-ESTEEM: Schuller's "self-esteem" concept is deliberately set in contrast to the emphasis on the lost sinner, which in fact is a primary thrust of Biblical teaching (cf. Luke 13:1-3, 11 Corinthians 5:11-21, Isaiah 64, Ephesians 2:3- 8, 4:17-21, Romans ch.'s 1,2,3, Luke 18:10, Jeremiah 17:9, Isaiah 53, Psalm 51, Luke 15, Matthew 9:13, 4:17, and Isaiah 41:28-42:1, Ezekiel 22:30 ...cf. Chapter 7 supra).

In absolute contrast, Isaiah registers something about zero when he comes by vision into the (NOT personally) presence of God (Isaiah 6:1,5-8), on even a magnified scale, as far as self-esteem is concerned! And for him, sin is made to figure centrally, like a black diamond in an engagement ring (cf. Psalm 51:1-6,10,17 -"my sin is ever before me" and indeed, "in iniquity did my mother conceive me").

Here then is one more modern preacher, popular with much of the populace, at least to the tune of having appeared on hundreds of TV stations and being featured for this acclaim, watched by millions, who contributes to the straight A results of Biblical prophecy, for this phase of our Age, in its advancing, yes advanced condition (e.g. II Timothy 3), as often expounded in this work. Schuller is in fact quoted by Hunt and McMahon (p. 15 - see bibl.) as considering attempts to make people "aware of their low and sinful condition" as deplorably "destructive to human personality".

This acutely 'revisionist' reconstruction is, to put it less modishly, blatantly in contradiction of basic Biblical teaching, thus adding very appropriately to our list of prominent Protestant proclaimers of transmuted substitutes for what the Bible requires, before Christ returns, to be done in His name. (Cf. pp. 684-690, and 867 ff. supra.) That is of course a predictive specific (cf. II Peter 2:1-3's "among you") and fits accurately the coverage by Christ re "many" false prophets as a last phase distinctive for our Age - an ageing Age by all the criteria He gave.

This adds to the broader delusions predicted as in II Thessalonians 2:10-11 and II Timothy 3, such as the imports from the East, the resurgent mysticisms in East-West religio-philosophic constructions, like New Age space-stations oddly moored on earth. Indeed the cup of prophetic fulfilment runneth over... While the motives of these speakers are not always clear (to us, who cannot 'judge' such things), yet the dynamics of delusion have ways of their own (cf. II Thessalonians 2:11).

Schuller's emphasis makes an amusing contrast with Paul's personal spiritual perspective and zealous athletic spur from the base "in me, that is in my flesh, dwells no good thing" (Philippians 3:7-15,21 with Romans 7:18). Cf. Chapter 7, pp. 594-623 supra.

874: LÈSE-MAJESTÉ - a breach of majesty, affront, insolence.

875: BRAGGADOCIO - a swelling attitude of pride, aplomb, deliberate high impact in self-presentation; high- spirited, 'overwhelming' self-display or energy release with a flushed style.

877: GRANDILOQUENCE - oratorical speech, speech in the grand manner.

879: REPLETE - quite full.

BIONIC - studied or constructed with living tissue as the notional base, whether with electronic or with other means; utilising life to contribute to desired ends. Engineering may begin to mix with physiology, with more and more disregard of the image man has, and increasing regard for what man wants: either for, or out of, himself. This may occur in thought or construction; with outer devices or with implants in man.

REPUDIATE - reject as false, disclaim.

DIVINATION - the granting or gaining of divine knowledge, messages.

EXPATIATE - to speak or write at length, with limited regard for time or space.

884: PARODY - a (sometimes wryly) humorous imitation designed to belittle, mock or to enjoy some other production, at its expense.

887: QUADRIPARTITE - existing as, or done through four parts (here sections of empire).

888: EFFICACY - power to perform to specifications.

892: JURISDICTIVE- relating to jurisdiction: due authority set over someone or something, to govern, guide or supervise it.

JUDICIAL - relating to judgment, especially by courts, but also of those giving survey to matters, seeking to determine their performance.

897: EXTRADITED - taken by law from one place or country to another for judgment.

898: INIQUITOUS - having iniquity: deep underlying sin or evil.

894: ABOMINATIONS - things found to be or declared to be disgusting, horrid, filled with evil, especially in impudent disregard of God's nature, authority and word.

900: MISBEGOTTEN - produced, generated or born, created in a thoroughly wrong way, so that things are far from what they should be.

903: WALDENSIAN - relating to the Waldensians, a pre-Reformation group of keenly Biblical Christians in Europe, but especially in Italy, hunted in the mountains by iniquitous papal force, but playing a fine part in keeping available the message of Christ, the only Master. Peter Waldo of France (where they were also strong, moving particularly in the French and Italian Alps) began the movement, preaching in the late twelfth century.

903: UNAM SANCTAM - a bull or formal pronouncement of Pope Boniface VII, in 1302, excluding, as he claimed, all from God who did not subject themselves to him.

Literally, the Bull means 'one holy' (church). Unfortunately, it had the wrong master, as this showed. This was the ultimate church effort at being first, a sad failing. Christ at once rebuked when this fleshly, worldly desire once apparently touched two disciples (Matthew 20:21; 23; 24 ff.); and evidently moved their mother.

They were corrected; Rome's correction, as shown (pp. 946-951 ff. infra) is still to come as far as force is concerned, though it has been exposed from Wickliffe and Tyndale on; as indeed, by others before, over many hundreds of years. Such exposure has often proved costly, even to blood, the penalty not infrequently, fire in a weird perversion of the Christian faith.

PETULANT - pert, insolent, peevish, irritable, moody.

The Romanist use of this term of certain Protestants rejecting its arrogant claims, was in itself a gross caricature: much the same misuse of words is part of the art of the misrule of another great totalitarian institution - Communism. It likes to use of itself the word 'democracy', though if ever the 'people' did not rule..! Again, by it, a power believing in free enterprise, and seeking to reduce its international holdings, may be called 'imperialist', while the Communist giant itself, till recently, collected nations as a boy might collect marbles. Foxe's Book of Martyrs gives many examples of peace and grace, as well as power and grace to resist the stormy verbal and fiery physical assaults of Rome... with blood and the testimony of Christ.

ANTITHETICAL: (see phenomenology) - wholly divergent; placed in opposition; showing resistance to, departure and a basic differentiation from a basic or other position.

905: PONTIFEX MAXIMUS - the name for the Roman Empire's high priest: a pagan matter of worldly authority for a primary political power. The Roman Pontiff relates all too clearly to this title, and to this authoritarian and worldly pagan preliminary, bred in the early city of Rome.

907: HIERARCHICAL PRIMACY - the position of first, in an ascending order of people in power.

907: LASER - a device containing material (such as a crystal) which can be stimulated by the entry of focussed light waves: amplifying and concentrating these, it can emit the light as a narrow, intense beam with special powers (a laser beam).

908: HEGEMONY - Leadership, dominance, formal broad directive power.

914: ARROGATE - take in an arrogant manner.

PONTIFICAL - relating to a pontifex, or high priest, to the Pope; having pomp and dignity or dogmatism like that of a pope. To pontificate is to announce with a pomp, ceremony or apparent assurance such as might be found in a pope, and hence tends to mean: to announce with shallow and impudent or unwarranted authority.

915: INCREATE - existing without needing to be created; not created, beyond such a need, existing intrinsically and self-sufficiently. The sole such being or entity is God.

920: IRONY - an indirect method of expression, where what is intended is not stated, but implied; and this, possibly by a directly contrary statement. It is not necessarily bitter or condemnatory, but essentially hidden: thus in Shakespeare, dramatic irony often occurs when the dramatist intends the audience to understand (without saying so), what is hidden from the actors.

CONCORDAT - a solemn or formal agreement, especially one between the pope and a government in which mutually acceptable conditions are agreed to, the government having one sort of rule, the pope another. The concordat with Hitler was one of the most-famous...

922: Q.V. - which see - to which you are referred (for example, by checking the index).

923: STULTIFICATION - making thick, clouded or stupid in the mind; rendering dull and mentally lifeless.

EXTIRPATE - to pull up by the roots, abolish.

925: MANDATORY - compelled, required.

927: UNPRECEDENTED - not seen before, without precedent or 'earlier' case, 'new.'

PROTOTYPE - a first or early type, an example for reference, a base.

REPRESSIVE - tending to use force to pressure people into obedience or submission, rather than using their strengths in freedom.

928: HISTORICISM - the view that something that for some reason has happened in the past (or even is merely asserted to have done so), becomes in itself an assurance of like results in the future. It disregards the questions of adequate grounds, openly or covertly, making history a creator, instead of a repository, or placement in the time of creation. It is often associated with reductionism and disregard of the actual evidence in practice.

928: ATHEISM - the endeavor to strip God from His creation; the statement or view that God does not exist, not seldom made. This is by those who, in so doing, ignorantly remove from themselves all power or possibility of being able, meaningfully, to assert anything to be the actual case: such as atheism.

IDEALISTIC - showing idealism; having ideals, vision, morals, principles, rather than being self-seeking or merely pragmatic, or concerned with the immediate or practical consequences of actions.

934: EMPIRICAL - concerned with what can be seen, heard, measured, noted in experiment or experience, as data.

935: PRIMA FACIE - at first sight; to appearance.

941: PREPONDERANCE - in comparison of parts, elements, this refers to the greater, weightier one.

948: SYNCRETISM - a mixing, enfolding, consorting, composing, compounding; attempt to blend diverse or even oppositie principles, approaches or beliefs, often by illicit or devious adaptations.

950: TOUR DE FORCE - a successful work of strength; a vigorous action bringing rigorous results.

INTEGUMENTAL - relating to the natural covering of a body or plant: to what holds it in.

951: EXCOMMUNICATION - a solemn act by which a member of some religious body is removed from it, because of real or alleged indications of not being a genuine Christian. Rome abused this power of recognising reality, and being itself heretical, false to the faith, excluded many who were not only true to the Biblical faith, but fine examples in it!

955: DISPARATE - not on a parity, unequal, separated.

956: ASPIRANT - someone who hopes for a reward, opportunity, post etc. - looks for it.

958: MOEURS - similar to English 'mores' (itself from Latin): this French word connotes morals, norms, moral character even, accepted custom. It has a slight European flavour of its own.

965: FIBRILLATION - doubtful, weak movement, as in a disquieted, a-rhythmic heart.

965: VOLATILITIES - rank, or excessive, or too sensitive emotional responses or reactions (from volatile - of a fluid, easily vaporised).

969: CONNIVANCE - knowledge of and help towards some wrongful act; passive co-operation.

981: TRADITIONALITIS - a play on medical - 'itis' words, which indicate inflammation. Here the meaning is this: a state of affairs or attitude in which tradition has swollen to become far weightier than it should be, in an unhealthy or even domineering way... as if inflamed.

983: DEPERSONALISED - made to be, or to appear as if having no personality,

DIVERGENT - moving in different directions.

DESUPERNATURALISED - reformulated by having any supernatural aspect removed.

PSYCHE - the soul, the essential life that renders man distinctive.

CONCURRENT - moving together, found together, acting in a single or similar direction.

COMPLEMENTARY - together making up one total whole in some way; each working so as to confirm and support the other in overall result.

OSCILLATE - move back and forth about a point or place.

EXPONENTS - those who expound, present and explain something; or who hold and present it.

CONSECUTIVELY - one after the other in order.

ANTI-BIBLICAL LICENCE - a freedom in handling things which contradicts the Bible teaching.

ULTIMATUM - a complete challenge from which no escape is intended to be possible.

DIVERTISSEMENT - a diversion, amusement: short play, ballet etc., performed between acts of a play or opera; a divertimento.

984: STYLISTIC PRECIOUSNESS - a type of style which shows too much self-consciousness, too much striving for effect, one not natural, or naturally related to the writer as a person.

UNCONTRIVED - not contrived: that is, not put together with special, and perhaps undue, or too much 'art'; hence, free and natural.

988: RECALCITRANT - not yielding to persuasion in some way of life or thought; fixedly staunch, often with a marked sense of doing so wrongly, for wrong objects, or being so portrayed; eminently resistant to tutoring and counselling; determined to act in a rebellious way.

989: UNVALIDATED - not shown to be sound, not shown to be true by test, not confirmed.

992: MÊLÉE - a mix-up, a throng, a confused mixture of elements, people; the midst of it.

995: COMELY - attractive, charming, pleasant.

ODYSSEY - any extended wandering or journey, especially one with colour and variety as that of Odysseus, in Homer's Odyssey.

EXCLUSIVISM - the quality of being - or a claim to be the only one... without competition; or of belonging to the only group etc.. Christ claimed to be the truth, the only way home. Breaking the truth might seem to leave men free, and in this licence, they wallow in wanton fashion, becoming increasingly unlivable in themselves and in their environment. Truth excludes error, but can receive those who receive it, through mercy: Christ, Truth, being God in expression.

996: OMNIPRESENT - present anywhere, free to be everywhere.

FLAMBOYANT - flame-like, colourful,vivid.

997: WHIMSICAL - gently and perhaps somewhat ironically amused and amusing.

998: RE-INCARNATABLE - able to be set forth in a body once again.

ANTI-DIFFERENTIATED - worked on in a way which obliterates, removes, stops differences; bringing to a sameness, or even a loss of distinctives, hence to a destruction.

METEMPSYCHOTIC - relating to 're-incarnation'.

999: IGNOMINIOUS - wholly unworthy, not even deserving a name, abasing, intensely humbling.

UNCONSCIONABLE - morally out of the question, wildly improper, perverse.

1000: UNVERBALISABLE - unable to be expressed in words, felt to be so.

1002C: METAPHYSICAL NESCIENCE - Nescience is systematic ignorance.

Metaphysics in its study of ultimate reality is always, and of necessity aborted when the available means of knowing what really is, outside appearance, are delusively denuded and denied by its assumptions or presuppositions. How would you explain anything, being yourself undeclarable, unattainable, unknowable: not graced with objective reality. Atheism, like agnosticism is really codified illusionism. (Cf. II Corinthians 10:12. See pp. 13-15 and Chapter 3 supra.)

1013: ANTINOMY - an alleged opposition of one law to another, when each is apparently reasonable. A device of Kant, it was based on his misconstruction of one law, the other, both or the background. See the author's PREDESTINATION AND FREEWILL, Appendix on Kant. When error arises, however, irresolvable conflicts in premises, in ideas, in concepts are only to be expected. It is their absence which is one mark of truth, of the Christian witness in the Bible; while their continued presence is the just and due affliction of non-Christian philosophy. See especially Chapter 3, supra, and Chapter 10.

MONISM - the view that all is one, of one substance, ultimate. Ancient Greeks posed atoms (but what of the spaces between them, the system they act in, the minds that err that think them, and of which they are merely a theory derivative ... what of the spirits that will, devise their purposes and then fail to reach them !); they posed fire, water, air as monistic machinations - what it all 'really is'; or motion or fixity, whereas flux can exhibit nothing and fixity cannot vary. Neither however is diversity so subdued, nor are opposites so composed, nor is cause so evaded (cf. p. 302, and Ch.s 1,3 supra). Modern specialists often fall for their own limited fields as the 'new' (but oh so old!) monisms (cf. pp. 882-884 supra). These Nature-worshippers all fall with Hume (Ch.3), with logic (Ch.1) and by the sheer competition of ever new fancies, readily analysed as to their pathological cause, as often shown in this work, but failing to meet the requirements of causality (cf. Ch.s 3, 5(1) and 4(3) - and Index causality), of individuality, of interface (Ch.4(1)) and of will. Creation's diversity is as irreducible as are the poems of an author, to just one. The sensed unity is in the Creator, thus providing as endless a dilemma for monists as would poetic similarities provide for those who by ideological obsession, denied the existence of the poet! See also the case of Einstein, pp. 299-303, 413-414 supra.

Biblical supernaturalism teaches that there is first the infinite Creator-creation division, then the creature man, in God's 'image' - then are there many orders of creation, both spiritual and physical, eminent and lowly. Spiritual eminence frequently is not as might appear (Mark 10:27-45).

1017: DOWERED MAN WITH THIS FELICITY AND FACILITY - to dower is to give, to bestow, to provide something for someone, to make a grant. Thus the meaning is this: he acted as if he had elevated man to a status of this great function, where he could readily and happily do all these things, which Buddha purported to be doing himself, in effect. However, he declared of man the precise opposite. Thus his theory about man was one thing; his assumptions for his own declarations were a flat contradiction of the position he adopted.

1020: AUTHENTICITY - the quality of being in fact, what is claimed; genuineness. authenticated - shown to be authentic. Legitimate - sound and lawful, not dishonest or only pretended.

1034: MARTYRDOM - the state or act of being or becoming a martyr: one who suffers for conviction, and is either grossly abused, tortured or killed. Frequently, it is the last.

1035: RECLAMATION - a bringing back from waste or loss, into production or acceptance.

1037: OSTENTATION - a showiness, a proud display, an effort to gain attention while seeming notable or important.

1041: SEDUCING SPIRITS - spirits, spiritual beings, devils who seek to, or actually do lead people astray, away from the truth; those which tempt, attract, mislead like a false lover.

1042: THE AORIST - is a past tense, and the 'gnomic' variety has a proverbial force; so that we look at something simply past, in the normal use, when a sense of a proverb or wise principle is not in view, but rather, as usual, just an action.

1045: MERETRICIOUS - alluring by false showy charms, in the manner of a prostitute; but the matter has a far broader coverage, this being merely one form of such general mischief.

MERITORIOUS - possessing merit, worthy of praise.

1046: PARAPHERNALIA - trappings, gear, collection of articles, personal belongings, general material associated with some task or activity.

1048: SANCTIFY - make holy, or more conformable to Christ, nearer to Him, more obedient to Him.

1050: TRINITARIAN - concerned with the trinity

FIAT - a command, a declaration given with authority, that something is to be done.

MONERGISTIC - characterised by - or the reult of - one person's working; done by one alone.

1052: ECCLESIATICAL - relating to a church.

1053: EXPEDITIOUS - moving the foot, moving speedily, acting without delay.

1056: MISCREANT - an erring or wandering creature, a bad or mischievous or roguish fellow.

1082: SECTARY - a dissenter from a church established by some State; for Rome, for example, a Protestant might be so disparagingly labelled, and indeed, libelled.

1083: AQUA REGIA - 'royal water', this is in fact a mixture of hydrochloric and nitric acid which is so corrosive that it dissolves even gold and platinum, which neither acid does alone. The application is this: even the most cunningly devised, compounded concoctions are unable to disrupt, dismiss or dispense with the word of God: with it, assault and repulse come to the same thing! Neither fluster nor bluster, cluster nor filibuster can contain it. You may intemperately attack the one who holds it; but the word itself is invulnerable: uttered, implemented, sustained and maintained by the only One who is both omniscient and almighty (or for that matter, either!).

1089: ALLEGORISING - using allegory: that is, a sustained, or prolonged parable, or story told not merely with imagery, but in it, so that the things to be conveyed are set in terms of a narrative illustration - e.g. Pilgrim's Progress, with its Mr Great Heart, Mr Worldly-Wiseman, and many others.

When however something is read into a work which does not provide ground for it, as IF it spoke in some image, the term 'allegorising' can therefore mean: interpreting in a vague, unwarranted, fanciful and undisciplined manner.

STRICTURE - a narrowing, a rebuke, criticism, sharp critical remark.

1093: CORUSCATING - flashing and sparkling, reflecting and gleaming; giving such responses.

1094: RECIDIVISM - a return to an evil, or to a view formerly rejected, to a crime or weak way: a lapse.

1100: PENCHANT - a leaning, inclination, feeling towards something.

1100: METAPHORICAL - relating to a metaphor: the opposite extreme of an allegory, this is a comparison which is so short, that it is not even introduced. E.g. he 'burst' into the room. We do not need the inverted commas, however. It is as if he burst into the room. Actually, he merely entered in a manner both quick and somewhat violent, sudden or startling. Metaphors may be rich and varied, subtly shifting in their themes, to evoke a multiple response. While dead metaphors, like the above, are killed by convention, multiplied metaphors need not be of one type, though some combinations are ludicrous and ill-conceived, being careless rather than crafted.

1101: IMPARTATION - the giving or providing and presenting of something to another.

1103: THEOCRATIC - relating to theocracy. This is a sort of political system in which God Himself provides some measure of direct rule, as when Moses under sometimes audible and constantly confirmed commands from the Lord, led the people. The leader here is not the criterion; which is rather the provision of explicit, divinely based governmental orders and their acceptance.

ANNUL - bring to nothing, stop, cancel.

1106: EXHORTATION - an urging to perform some good thing, often in the name of Christ and according to scripture; a pressing of the practical need to obey.

1113: ARMINIAN - relating to the type of views popularised by Jacobus Arminius, or of those who do not continue in the doctrines of or dedication to Calvinism. Points of difference and emphasis would include lack of eternal certainty in and closeness to Christ, the use of the freewill and revision of predestination. While the points made were not sound, there is no place on the other hand, for autonomous and authoritarian theology of a reductionist kind; it is the Bible which is authoritative.

John Wesley attacked the Calvinist views of the famous evangelist Whitefield, but Spurgeon rightly points out that all the scriptures on each aspect of these matters must be honoured. When this is done, a magnificent and unique harmony exists between all these Biblical concepts. As so often, a philosophising extravaganza often afflicts the views in opposition, so that there may be a tendency to hold to some one thing or little group, and then (unconsciously) to re-define it so that it fits a feeling, preference or viewpoint, and then not to face other scriptures. It is, for analogy, rather like having impurities in a number of chemical solutions, and then wondering why the proper colour does not appear when you mix them.

See index: predestination. See my PREDESTINATION AND FREEWILL for a very detailed analysis and account of such actions.

1114: DESIGNATION - something termed or styled in a certain manner; something pointed out.

UBIQUITOUS - always present, always there, inescapable.

1115: INCISIVE - sharp, not vague, clear, clean and to the point.

1116: PERSONIFICATION - the rendering of something not personal, as if it were; making something into a person, as a figure of speech... as a form of expression, an imagination.

1118: INTERDICT - to prohibit, restrain; in Romanist religion, to remove from office or functioning, as of a priest in his work.

1122: PERDITION - a state of being lost, left to perish.

1123: UNIVERSAL REDEMPTION - the confused concept that all are redeemed, paid for, whether they know it, like it, care or not. This contradicts Old Testament procedure in which the sinner came, secured or brought his sacrifice and had it sacrificed, placed his hands on it, and confessed his sin. Without such appropriation, sacrifice, though always available, did not relate to him at all; far less was he redeemed without sacrifice.

The nation-wide sacrifices meet with the realities of Deuteronomy 29, where the sinner who disregards what is going on, in his heart, is told what is available. Nothing! While he may say in himself, "I shall have peace, even though I walk in the imagination of my heart" - as though the drunkard could be included with the sober, yet - the Lord will not spare him; for then the anger of the Lord... would burn against that man; and every curse written in this book would settle on him, and the Lord would blot out his name from under heaven, and the Lord would separate him from all the tribes of Israel for adversity, according to... the covenant. Such is the plight of pseudo-faith (as in Matthew 7:21-22. In the book of James, there is strong intent on distinguishing between sham and functional faith (cf. SMR, Ch. 7, pp. 521-532).

Faith was always needed for incorporation in the situation, together with what is offered. Thus Paul in Romans 8:32, says this:

He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, How shall He not with Him also freely give us all things ?
Now those who are given all things certainly have eternal life in this context! Who are they ? Those for whom Jesus was delivered up. Hence He was delivered up for the elect exclusively. Anyone in the category of one for whom Christ was delivered up, is also in the category of being a Christian, to whom 'all things' are given freely.

Now He loved more than these, for God is love; and He is available for more than these, for He is offered, held out as a propitiation (just like the national lamb slain) for all; but the delivering up, the sin-bearing, the penalty absorption, the guilt reception, the disbursal of payment in death, this has its effectual target as those who will be saved. God in His love knows and He acts for His own: there is nothing left to 'chance' in such a matter! (Similarly, it is 'we' who by His stripes are healed, as Isaiah 53:4-6 advises us, whom He delivers. That is the ''we' to whom the prophet refers, when he says that on Him was laid the iniquity of us all. That 'we' defines the 'us' also. Stripes He bears for those who by stripes are healed. God does not lose the cost of redemption in the process of paying it!)

This follows with necessity from Romans 8:32, as shown. So 1 John 2:1 provides the scenario of offer, the scope of love, as does Colossians 1:19-23; but Romans and indeed the Lord remind us that, just as was always the case in the Old Testament, so also now, all His sheep are believers and all the believers are redeemed. For these, His sheep, the good shepherd has laid down His life. What does not enter the door (John 10:9) does not enter the band of believers, the company of sheep, the reality of the redeemed, but dies, as He said, in its sins, retaining and liable for what it never yielded. Other sheep than the Jews come; but these by the same word, on the same terms, within the confines of the same gospel (John 17:20).

Accordingly, Jesus did not say, You are not my sheep because you do not believe, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. The faith which enters the reality of redemption is not caused by his sheep, so qualifying, but caused in them, because they are qualified by His predestining grace. Redemption is for His own sheep, who accordingly believe and receive. What is not His sheep does not believe because of this. The scope of His love is the world; the scope of His redemptive offer is the world; but the scope of His redemption is those whom He redeems, who have eternal redemption (Hebrews 9:12, I John 3:9). Thus, being justified by His blood, we are saved from wrath through His life (Romans 5:9-10). These, entering by the door, are accepted and saved, secure His accepting and constant care, and being His, are even the subjects of the shepherd's due sacrifice and the very laying down, of His life.

EFFECTUATE - to bring into effect, to cause to take place, bring to pass.

1128: ACTUATING - moving to action, as a primary motive, drawing; stirring from the heart. Depending on the nature of what actuates one, will be the fulfilment of that principle, be it personal or other.

1129: AMBULANT - moving about, this way and that.

1135: EVENTUATION - what happens, the way a thing comes to be in history, in the world of events.

ACCOUNTABILITY - the fact that people must give account of what they do, are held responsible for what they do with their lives (Ephesians 6:8, Romans l4:8-13, II Corinthians 5:10).

1137: TEMPORAL - temporary, concerned with this present time, not eternal by nature, passing .

1145: INVIDIOUS - hateful, exciting ill-will or envy, or liable to do so; being offensive by discriminating unfairly.

1146: POTENTATES - powerful people; those with much influence and authority.

EVINCE - show, demonstrate, give evidence of.

1148: CAVORT - to disport gleefully or act with playful abandon or free jollity.

1150: PITH - the essential centre, the substance.

1151: DECLAMATION - a forceful declaration, with some oratory attached.

1158: INGENUOUS - noble, frank, innocent, not artful or devious, straightforward and candid.

1159: PSEUDEPIGRAPHIC - relating to pseudepigrapha. These are writings spurious, not authentic, presented as if from well-known authors, or inspired, but constituting no more than literary pretension. They are not what they claim to be, not written by those stated.

Biblical prophets were vulnerable, liable, if false in their predictions, because of the death penalty of Deuteronomy 18. Thus they were clearly defined people; as were the apostles! Christianity in all respects insists on realities, tests and exhibition of actuality, such as portrayed by Jesus Christ Himself, openly teaching, as He stated, in the Temple (John 18:20-21):

I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. Why do you ask Me ? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said.

A FORTIORI - by how much the more - i.e. if A be so, by how much more will B be so! The term is used in arguments of this form or type, where the first step is clear or strong, so that the increase in the terms makes it yet more clear, yet more forceful, yet more sure.

1169: ERUDITION - polished learning, skilfully and carefully put in place.

IRREFRAGABLE - not able to be broken, denied or refused; strong, sure and steadfast: of arguments, positions.

1173: ABSTRUSE - not obvious, removed from normal areas of thought; deep and profound.

1178: VINDICATE - show to be right, or maintain with acceptance in the face of enemies or adversities.

1185: DURESS - force wrongly used, to disturb the realities of a case; shameful manipulation or intimidation... hardness.
